FYI: I have been very apprehensive to publish this post…but here it goes:

This may be the craziest challenge I’ve ever done…and I’ve done some crazy challenges. Like the time one of my sisters decided that she wanted to challenge all of us to get in shape and run nearly 200 miles through the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains around Lake Tahoe…this is crazier!

I am challenging myself to not eat any refined sugar for ONE HUNDRED DAYS. That’s right, no cookies, no cake, no soda, and basically no packaged foods for 100 days. My challenge began on 1/3/2018 and my last day will be on Friday the 13th of April…is that a bad omen?

To hold myself accountable, I am putting this out in the InterWebs, AND rather than give myself a reward at the end of my accomplishment (since I am not very well motivated by rewards), I am going to make it a consequence that if I knowingly consume refined sugar (see list below), then I will donate $1,000 to charity: water. That would be a very expensive cookie!

If you would like to join me in this challenge, let me know that you accept the challenge and I will help you stay on track…we can help each other stay on track! As a reward for accepting and completing this challenge, I will offer one FREE, follow-up acupuncture treatment in my clinic ($80 value). Grab a friend and their reward for completing this challenge will be a new patient treatment with me for only $20.

The Rules:

No refined sugar for 100 days.

  • white sugar
  • brown sugar
  • raw sugar
  • Turbinado sugar
  • artificial sweeteners
  • high fructose corn syrup
  • corn syrup
  • maltodextrin
  • …basically all the other names that refined sugar hides behind

I have to read all packaged food labels. If there is any refined sugar listed under its numerous pseudonyms, I must knowingly stay away.

If I eat at a restaurant that does not disclose its ingredients and they happen to use sugar, I am not knowingly eating refined sugar, so that will not count.

Fruit sugars do not count. As a matter of fact, sugar from a serving of fruit is a really good option when one is having sugar cravings.

This will be ENTIRELY on the honor system. If I choose to cheat, I am only cheating myself and charity: water will benefit from it.

I plan to keep a daily “No-Sugar” journal to track the ups and downs of this 100 day journey.
